ADFED
is the educational wing of Asian Dub Foundation. Launched
by members of ADF in 1998, ADFED is now an independent
project giving training to under-represented youth communities,
in the London Borough of Tower Hamlets and the East
London region.
The organisation is aimed at giving young people who
are passionate about making music, opportunities to
develop their creativity and especially, for those who
dont have access to musical equipment and training.
Our projects are designed specifically to represent
issues relating to Asian/Black and Ethnic minority youth
cultures, particularly around issues relating to young
people facing socio-economic barriers; social exclusion;
gender imbalance, refugee/asylum issues and more. We
aim to access these groups and in turn promote opportunities
to access cultural industries via festivals, productions
and arts events. ADFED is linked to major partnerships,
such as LYMAZ to promote it's aims and objectives.
Our work is based around two main projects:
1. Music Technology Workshops
The ADFED workshops are an introduction to music technology,
composition and arrangement at entry level.
Each course of workshops runs for 10 weeks with each
session lasting three hours. During this time those
attending will participate in all the processes involved
in composing and recording music, working with industry
standard, user friendly equipment. . Students are also
allocated studio time for individual practice sessions.
Course areas covered include:
* Sampling
* Rhythm programming
* Sequencing & editing
* Song structure & arrangement
* Mixing & mastering
We also encourage musicians who play acoustic instruments
(Bass/lead guitar, flute, sax etc) to utilise and incorporate
their skills within the works created in the sessions,
as well as encourage traditional elements to be part
of their work. At the end of the course, each student
will have a recorded piece of music that they have created
to take away with them.
2. Sound system events
At the end of each of our workshop projects, we hold
events to showcase the vibrant and diverse music created
by our students. These events are a valuable way of
students making contacts with other musicians and having
the opportunity to perform in a professional environment
and in public venues.
